Earth Day for me is a day to celebrate the beauty of God's creation and think about what I can do to help keep it clean and healthy. It's a day that I always celebrate with my class because it ties in with what we're learning about energy and ecosystems, and I think it's important for kids to learn environmentally friendly behaviours.
Our planet is so amazing and we are blessed to live in such a beautiful country. The first photo was taken on Cape Breton Island (that's Stephen standing there!) and the second one is one of my favourite autumn photos I've taken.
When it comes to the environment I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the issues we face in looking after it (climate change, energy consumption, etc.). I wonder what I can possibly do about it and I end up doing nothing. Instead, this week I was thinking about all the little things I am doing (e.g. recycling) and can start doing that are earth-friendly, and frankly, just being responsible. At the grocery store I spotted these new re-usable bags (third photo). They feel like canvas but apparently they are made of 85% recycled plastic! The tag says by using one of these bags each time I grocery shop I will use around 100 fewer plastic bags each year. I bought five of them and decided that this could be one of my "little things" I can do to make a difference. I feel greener already. :)
